ARAI VAS-A SHIELD, MAX-VISION - DARK SMOKE

The XD-5 is a completely redesigned helmet, packed with many new features. As with everything from Arai, every improvement is made with a priority for protection. And this new model brings us ever closer to the ideal Arai shape for protection.

One of the biggest changes is the visor system and its visor. The new VAS-A visor system, derived from the VAS-V system originally developed for the Corsair-X, has been designed to maximize Glancing-Off performance, meaning more surface area to glance off impact energy whilst offering easy installation and removal of the visor and peak. The visor itself has been redesigned for increased visibility and Glancing-Off performance, and is now a Max Vision visor, so a Pinlock insert can easily be installed. The new VAS-A visor system also makes it easier to switch, without tools, to one of the other styles. You can choose between Adventure, Off-road and On-road.

XD-5 FIT

XD-5 PEAK

The all-new peak is designed for more effective ventilation, increased high speed flow-through performance, greater range of adjustability for blocking the sun, and is more resistant to buffeting, all of which leads to an overall more comfortable riding experience. 

THREE DISTINCT CONFIGURATIONS

The XD-5 offers three distinct configurations depending on rider preference or riding conditions. Change the look every time you ride, or even during the same ride. 

The XD-5 has the option to use just the shield for street use, just the peak (with a set of your favorite goggles) for off-road use, and the shield and peak combined to create a truly multi-functional ADV helmet. 

ALL-NEW SHELL AND VAS-A SHIELD SYSTEM

The new VAS-A Max Vision system allows for easier and faster shield swaps. The shield can be attached or removed without the need for any tools. The peak utilizes only one screw on each side for removal/installation. 

The amount of energy that any helmet can absorb is limited and we believe in a crash the only option is to have the helmet glance in a way that directs the impact energy away from the inside of the helmet. The shell of the XD-5 is designed to be round, smooth, and strong so that it can more easily ‘glance off’ impact energy in an actual crash. 

CHIN VENT

The opening area for the XD-5 mouth-shutter is double the size compared to the XD-4. Thanks to the evolution in shell strength from the previous generation, the aperture could be made larger, and the mouth shutter could be made to flow more fresh air without the need for the mesh vents as seen on its predecessors. 

INNER SHUTTER

Working in conjunction with the mouth shutter, the inner shutter allows you to adjust the amount of airflow entering the helmet. If the inner and outer shutters are both open, the air will be directed towards your mouth. If the outer shutter is open and the inner closed, the air will be directed towards the shield and help to reduce fogging.  

FRONT LOGO VENT

The effectiveness of conventional forehead vents could be limited by the rider's position, but with the front logo duct, airflow is unaffected by changes in riding position. Thanks to advances in shell technology, we can add holes in the forehead area for this vent without compromising the helmet's ability to protect.

AR SPOILER

Set in a position that makes it ideal for adventure riding, the AR spoiler contributes to reducing fatigue from turbulent air throughout long rides and works to draw out hot air from the crown area.

VAS-A MAX VISION SHIELD PIN-LOCK

The new max-vision shield preserves the wide field-of-view and high level of visibility expected of an XD model. The Pinlock insert for this model has advanced to be effective at resisting fogging, even in extreme conditions, across the entire field of view.

*The Pinlock insert is an optional accessory, with one included in the box upon helmet purchase.

ODOR-RESISTANT INTERIOR

The XD-5 utilizes an interior liner that has the same level of acidity as bare skin and has odor-resistant and stain-resistant properties. The headliner is equipped with a removable foam layer on both the left and right sides for temples and a removable foam layer in the rear of the head-liner, allowing you to remove 5mm of foam if desired for exceptional micro-fitting adjustability.

*Once micro-fit pads are removed they cannot be replaced.

AIR FLAP

The retractable pull-down spoiler reduces wind intrusion into the bottom of the helmet and helps to pull out hot and humid exhaled air around the sculpted leading edges of the cheek pads. This coordinated ventilation, combined with fresh intake from the chin vent, also helps to reduce shield fogging.  

*Optional ES Chin Cover can be used, but not included. 

COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE CAPABILITY

The Hyper-Ridge® has been re-sculpted to provide a flat surface on the sides to allow for the easy installation of a wide range of communication devices. This increases the bonding surface between the device and the helmet and helps to reduce buffeting or possible slip-offs.

SPEAKER POCKET

Speakers can be installed directly to the provided hook & loop panel without the need to remove the cheek pad covers. Both ear pockets are deep and wide, designed to accommodate thicker speakers with plenty of room to position them to increase comfort. 

NECK ROLL WIRE POCKET

A pocket to tuck away excess wiring and connectors as well as holes to easily run wires from side to side, have been incorporated into the neck roll to prevent wires coming loose while putting on or taking off the helmet. These features provide a smart way to tackle cable management inside your helmet.

VAS-V Shield Mechanism

The Contour-X has the new VAS mechanism with a variable axis incorporating a moving pivot point. By combining the pin trajectory, which is based on an imaginary axis, with the two trajectories of the double pivot point slot, the shield opens and closes smoothly even with the much lower shield mount position.

A dual-function lever releases both the side cover/pod and shield pin for quick and simple shield removal. Being able to see the shield mechanism allows for easier shield changes.

3D ARAI LOGO DUCT

Immediately noticeable, the new 3D Arai logo duct (made as thin as possible, just 3.5mm in depth) feeds two central 10mm intake ports. This is a first in an Arai, and entirely due to PB-cLc2’s strength and the shell construction.

It also works very well at low speed and with an upright riding position; at just 31mph it’s channelling an extra 40% airflow, at 74.5mph, 7%. It can also be opened, or closed, quickly with summer or winter gloves, via a short-stroke lever placed at the top; if the rider can’t see the lever and the logo is in its normal place, the duct is open. The Arai logo duct is designed to break away in the event of an impact.

AERODYNAMIC REAR SPOILER WITH ONE PIECE EXHAUST FUNCTION

The one-piece aerodynamic rear exhaust/spoiler, operated by a 3-way switch, is inspired by the DF-X2 of the Corsair-X, but redesigned for touring use – however, it was tested up to 300km/h at Suzuka. It sits a little more forward on the shell and is fed by 3 ports in the shell. As part of Contour-X’s comprehensive ventilation system it efficiently draws air but also smooths airflow over (and from the side) of the helmet, improving stability and reducing buffeting, especially while overtaking at highway speeds. The result is much less rider fatigue. Manufactured as thin and light as possible it’s designed to crush or break away upon impact, therefore having no influence on protective performance.

AIR-SCOOP CHIN VENT

Also new is the 3-position (open, midway, and closed) sliding air-scoop chin vent which flows a larger intake volume of air and has a replaceable filter. The actuating mechanism is thicker and easy to use with gloves.

INTERCOM ACCOMMODATION

Designed to fit and connect a communication system easily on the shell exterior – and without any compromise to the protection offered by the inner EPS liner.

OUTER SHELL: PB-cLc2 (PERIPHERALLY BELTED COMPLEX LAMINATE CONSTRUCTION)

The Contour-X outer shell design outlines a stylish, organic shape and uses PB-cLc2 for lightweight strength. The AR-mat has been substituted with a new material which makes it possible to reduce the weight, while maintaining strength. An extra layer of Super Fiber belting maintains rigidity in a crucial area while offering fl at sides for easy fi tment of an intercom system.

5MM WIDER OPENING

The exclusive shell fl ares 5mm around the opening, making it easier to get the helmet on and off (for newcomers to Arai the initial ‘snugness’ when putting the helmet on or taking it off can be challenging).

NECK ROLL WIRE POCKET

A small stitched opening on the inside of the neck roll allows the intercom system installer to easily tuck away any excess wiring that may be left-over after installing the speakers. For a nice, clean final look and ride.

VAS SHIELD SYSTEM

The Variable Axis System shield mechanism was developed to enhance the shape of the shell, but the easy to learn changing mechanism is what most people are raving about. Quick, easy and intuitive.

IMPROVED SHIELD LATCH

The VAS latch captures and securely holds the shield closed to help prevent unexpected opening. In addition to the de-mist function, the larger latch allows for intuitive and seamless shield operation.

IMPROVED GLANCE OFF ABILITY

The VAS pivot cover is now smaller and lower than the previous design, yielding an average of 24mm more area above the cover. The shell is now smoother along the Snell test line in the temple area, thus increasing the helmet’s ability to glance off objects during an impact.

Compared with the shell of the Corsair-V, the smooth area around the temple is increased by an average of 24mm on the new VAS model. Having a rounder, smoother, stronger shell to improve glance off ability.

PB-CLC SHELL

Born from Arai’s exclusive Formula One helmet technology, the Peripherally Belted Complex Laminate Construction shell is developed to be both light and strong. The upper edge of the eye port is reinforced with Arai’s Peripheral Belt, custom woven in-house with proprietary super fibers to increase shell strength without adding thickness or weight.

ONE-PIECE MULTI-DENSITY LINER

A one-piece multi-density liner, tuned with varying densities according to the position and volume of each given area within each shell size, provides protection where it’s needed most, and allows Arai to make a compact helmet that puts protection first, and is as aerodynamic and light as possible.

INTERIOR: SEMI-REMOVABLE LINER

The top padding stays in place but the liner is fixed with Velcro and easily removed for cleaning.

INTERIOR: REPLACEABLE CHEEK PADS/EAR CUPS

Depending on the model, cheek pads, ear cups or the complete interior may be easily removed. All parts (replaceable or not) can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild soap. Rinse well after cleaning and never dry in direct sunlight or near a heat source. Interior parts in different size thickness are available for a custom fit for every rider.

COMFORT: 5MM WIDER BASE

The exclusive shell flares 5mm around the base, making it easier to get the helmet on and off (for newcomers to Arai the initial ‘snugness’ when putting the helmet on or taking it off can be challenging).

REAR VENTILATION: SIDE EXHAUSTS

Produce low pressure behind the rear vent for better hot air extraction. Integrated in the shell for better aerodynamics, reduce wind noise and prevent buffeting at speed. Inside, a small foam dam helps to absorb and diminish excessive noise, without reducing ventilation performance.

REAR VENTILATION: NECK EXHAUST VENT

To enhance hot-air extraction from the interior. Increases the ventilation effect at the lower part of the helmet.

CHIN CURTAIN

Attached to the bottom of the helmet, the new chin curtain helps to further accentuate the Egg-shape form. The curtain simultaneously blocks air intrusion from turbulent air below and increases negative pressure to enhance the exhaust function of FFS by drawing more air from the mouth area. The improved airflow reduces noise even further.

FACIAL CONTOUR SYSTEM (FCS)

To offer an even better snug fit and enhancing the comfort to the lower jaw, the Facial Contour System (FCS) works with a foam spring support in the cheek pad that compresses and rebounds, providing the necessary support without excessive pressure.
